What’s it All About
A village hardy perennial, our Vegetable, Flower and Produce Show has been the signature annual village event for over 40 years. So long established and comfortingly familiar, it reliably flowers mid July every year, thanks to the dedication of it’s indefatigable organiser Rosie White. Over the last 26 years she has developed and expanded competition opportunities to incorporate arts and crafts of all sorts to run alongside the fiercely fought garden vegetable, fruit, flower and baking prize cups. There really are opportunities for everyone and all can compete as long as they live in either of the Wilbrahams’ or Six Mile Bottom.
Youngsters, in their own specialised “under 12’s“ categories, have a part to play too. Village school children now contribute a lot to the proceedings, competing for prizes in their own specialised categories, although there’s nothing to stop them taking on the grownups independently for the main challenge cups as long as they live in one of the villages or attend Great Wilbraham Primary School.
Bette Armstrong, a stalwart organiser of the Show from many years ago, has a useful tip for competitors:
“Read the schedule instructions carefully and make sure you display your entry exactly as specified. If six potatoes in a basket are specified, that’s what you must display. Definitely not four in the basket and a couple more propped up on the side. The judges are ruthless and your entry will be disqualified if you have erred.”
However, don’t let this put you off…it’s all about the taking part!
Volunteer Show Helpers Always Required!
