Hands on orchids

The Gardening Club meeting, this month October, tackled Orchid propagation, their amazing genetic history and everything to do with their care. The speaker, Robert Brett, Curator, RHS Garden Hyde Hall, was outstandingly good, involving us with hands-on experience of pollenating individual Orchid flowers. Picture shows us at work and deeply engrossed. Robert’s knowledge has been honed after many years studying and working at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, followed by time at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and also at the Eden Project. He has also worked for the Sainsbury Laboratory Plant Science research Facility in Cambridge.

Next meeting of The Wilbrahams’ Gardening Club is on 19th November – 7:30 in the Memorial Hall. The speaker is Chantel Carr from the RSPB who will be advising us on how to make our gardens bird friendly during the winter months
